Zusammenfassung:When Mary Robinson played 'Perdita' at Drury Lane, she captivated the Prince of Wales. So began a very public love affair. But the Prince was not her only admirer. Mrs Robinson's 'genius and engaging manners' attracted some of the most famous figures of the day, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Mary Wollstonecraft, William Godwin and David Garrick among them. She also netted the Duchess of Devonshire, who became her patron, Gainsborough painted her portrait, the Duc d'Orleans courted her in Paris, and Marie-Antoinette gave her a purse. Robinson's talents, however, were not confined to stage, parlour or bedroom. In addition to her acting and her amours, she published novels, plays and poetry; one of her poems welcomed the French Revolution and another was written, like 'Kubla Khan' under the influence of opium. She also edited the poetry section of the Morning Post, an important radical London daily.
