Zusammenfassung: | Notes from the Periphery attempts to examine the dynamics of marginalization and define the factors that have caused certain texts to be labeled as marginal while others are considered central and thus crucial in maintaining and perpetuating mainstream cultural values Within the Western European tradition, Aristotelian thought has played a crucial role in staking out the center (i.e., the locus of power and authority) for certain groups and relegating others to the periphery; and it is not without significance that today's neo-conservative thinkers have adopted Aristotelian tactics. Thus, Castillo outlines the basic tenets of Aristotelian thought and traces the continuing influence of Aristotelian attitudes in the canon debate She then goes on to analyze writers or historical figures who were labeled as fanatics, diagnosed as mad or sexually depraved, or dismissed as quaint regional or ethnic curiosities |

spelling | Castillo, Susan 1948- Verfasser (DE-588)133283070 aut Notes from the periphery marginality in North American literature and culture Susan P. Castillo New York [u.a.] Lang 1995 XIII, 195 S. txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier [American university studies / 24] 63 Notes from the Periphery attempts to examine the dynamics of marginalization and define the factors that have caused certain texts to be labeled as marginal while others are considered central and thus crucial in maintaining and perpetuating mainstream cultural values Within the Western European tradition, Aristotelian thought has played a crucial role in staking out the center (i.e., the locus of power and authority) for certain groups and relegating others to the periphery; and it is not without significance that today's neo-conservative thinkers have adopted Aristotelian tactics. Thus, Castillo outlines the basic tenets of Aristotelian thought and traces the continuing influence of Aristotelian attitudes in the canon debate She then goes on to analyze writers or historical figures who were labeled as fanatics, diagnosed as mad or sexually depraved, or dismissed as quaint regional or ethnic curiosities Geschichte 1880-1950 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1950-1990 gnd rswk-swf Amerikaans gtt Chefs-d'uvre (Littérature) Femmes et littérature - États-Unis - Histoire Letterkunde gtt Littérature américaine - Aspect social ram Littérature américaine - Histoire et critique - Théorie, etc Littérature américaine - Histoire et critique - Théorie, etc ram Littérature canadienne - Histoire et critique - Théorie, etc ram Littérature canadienne-anglaise - Histoire et critique - Théorie, etc Littérature et société - États-Unis - Histoire Littérature et société - États-Unis - Histoire ram Marginaliteit gtt Marginalité - dans la littérature ram Marginalité dans la littérature Marginaux - Dans la littérature ram Minorités - Dans la littérature ram Minorités dans la littérature Literatur American literature History and criticism Theory, etc Canadian literature History and criticism Theory, etc Canon (Literature) Literature and society United States Marginality, Social, in literature Minorities in literature Women and literature United States Kanon (DE-588)4131583-2 gnd rswk-swf Marginalität Motiv (DE-588)4547991-4 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Wandel (DE-588)4234987-4 gnd rswk-swf Minderheit Motiv (DE-588)4228551-3 gnd rswk-swf Nordamerika USA North America Intellectual life USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Kanon (DE-588)4131583-2 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s DE-604 Minderheit Motiv (DE-588)4228551-3 s Geschichte 1880-1950 z Wandel (DE-588)4234987-4 s Geschichte 1950-1990 z Marginalität Motiv (DE-588)4547991-4 s 24] [American university studies 63 (DE-604)BV000819256 63 DNB Datenaustausch application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=006975676&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
