CONTENTS
Preface xi
Gail Kunkle
Grooming 767
Susan McDonough
Although cats are low maintenance pets, routine grooming pro¬
vides medical benefits and enhances the interaction between pet
owner and cat. The methods of restraint, necessary equipment,
clipping and bathing procedures, and special situations are dis¬
cussed.
Diagnostic Procedures in Feline Dermatology 779
James O. Noxon
The proper performance and interpretation of diagnostic tests are
crucial in the management of the feline patient with dermatologic
disease. A thorough history and complete physical examination
should be performed on each patient, followed by appropriate
diagnostic tests for the problems identified in the patient. This
article reviews the indications, methodology, and key features of
diagnostic procedures used in dermatology.
The Cat, The Flea, and Pesticides 801
Dawn B. Logas
Recent advances in our knovvlege of cat flea biology and the
discovery of new nontoxic methods of flea control have greatly
simplified and improved flea control. Instead of relying on adulti
VETERINARY CLINICS OF NORTH AMERICA:
SMALL ANIMAL PRACTICE

cides for the bulk of flea control, the veterinarian now focuses on
the immature stages, particularly the larvae and the eggs. By
doing this, environmentally friendly flea control methods are
used that are much safer for the veterinarian, the pet owner, and
the cat.
Exudative, Crusting, and Scaling Dermatoses 813
Candace A. Sousa
This article discusses the differential diagnoses for the dermato
logic diseases of the cat that present with the primary owner
complaint of scaling, crusting, and exudation. Clinical signs, diag¬
nostic tests, and therapies are included for each disease.
Selected Feline Eosinophilic Skin Diseases 833
Helen T. Power and Peter J. Ihrke
The eosinophilic skin diseases: eosinophilic plaque, mosquito bite
hypersensitivity, eosinophilic granuloma, and indolent ulcer are
discussed. The importance of identification of which syndrome is
present in an individual cat is emphasized as there are differences
in clinical course. Recommendations for diagnostic evaluation
and therapeutic management are made.
Focal and Generalized Alopecia 851
Hilary A. O Dair and Aiden P. Foster
Focal or generalized alopecia is defined as hair loss affecting the
ventral, lateral, perineal, and dorsal aspects of the trunk of the
cat, usually in a symmetric pattern. This may be attributable to
failure of hair coat production, excess loss of hair due to self
trauma, or excess shedding of whole hairs. Self trauma is the
most common cause of hair loss and is associated particularly
with flea allergy dermatitis. Other causes of hair loss are re¬
viewed.
Erosive and Ulcerative Skin Disease 871
Donna Walton Angarano
Many causes exist for ulcerative disease of the skin and mucous
membranes of cats. Etiologies range from autoimmune, to infec¬
tious, to environmental cavises. The diagnostic work up includes
a thorough history and physical examination, along with cytol¬
ogy, skin biopsy, hemogram, serum biochemical evaluation, and
feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus
(F1V) testing. Therapy is dependent on the underlying cause.
Nodules and Draining Tracts 887
Karin M. Beale
Nodules are circumscribed elevations in the skin surface greater
than 1 cm in diameter and are a result of a great influx of
Vi CONTENTS
inflammatory cells or neoplastic cells into the dermis and/or
subcutaneous tissues. Draining tracts occur most commonly in
nodules associated with bacterial or fungal infectious processes.
The differential diagnosis of such lesions would include infectious
processes (bacterial, fungal, and viral), neoplasia, foreign bodies,
eosinophilic granuloma complex, and miscellaneous conditions
such as sterile panniculitis and xanthogranulomas. Diagnosis gen¬
erally involves biopsies for histopathology, culture and sensitivity
testing, and cytologic examination of any exudate.
Feline Dermatophytosis: Recent Advances and
Recommendations for Therapy 901
Karen A. Moriello and Douglas J. DeBoer
Feline dermatophytosis is one of the most common skin diseases
of cats. In the past, much of the information available on this
subject stemmed from clinical observations. This article summa¬
rizes current research findings on the epidemiology, immunology,
pathogenesis, and treatment of feline dermatophytosis. As a re¬
sult of these studies, the authors propose new recommendations
for treatment.
Facial, Pedal, and Other Regional Dermatoses 923
Carol S. Foil
This article discusses disorders of the head and face, including
feline acne, solar dermatoses, pruritus of the head and neck, and
nodular or ulcerative dermatoses of the head. Disorders of the
pinna, otitis externa, and nasal diseases are highlighted. In addi¬
tion, a discussion of pododermatitis and diseases of the claws
and ungual fold is presented. Miscellaneous regional dermatoses
include midline ulcerative dermatitis, stud tail, and vaccine in¬
duced lesions.
Systemic Diseases with Cutaneous Manifestations 945
Sandra R. Merchant and Joseph Taboada
The purpose of this article is to briefly discuss the following
cutaneous manifestations of selected sytemie diseases: poxvirus;
feline leukemia virus (FeLV); feline immunodeficiency virus
(FIV); herpesvirus; calcivirus; pseudorabies; plague; tuiaremia;
toxoplasmosis; leishmania; hypothyroidism; hyporthyroidism;
hyperadrenocorticism; diabetes mellitus; acromegaly; thallium
poisoning; pancreatic disease; hypereosinophilic syndrome; mu
copolysaccharidosis; and pansteatitis. Recognition of these cuta¬
neous signs may help alert the clinician to the possibility of an
internal disorder so that the appropriate diagnostic tests can be
considered.
CONTENTS vii
Feline Cutaneous and Subcutaneous Neoplasms 961
Leslie E. Fox
This article contains practical information about the more com¬
mon feline skin tumors and an update on recent treatments. The
tumor type, gross appearance, clinical behavior, prognosis, and
treatment are provided.
Therapy for Feline Dermatoses 981
Linda M. Messinger
This article compiles information on various therapies used in
feline dermatology. Information on the following therapeutic
agents and devices is discussed: antibiotics, antifungals, antilep
rosy drugs, antiparasiticides, antivirals, antihistamines, behavior
modification drugs, fatty acids, progestogens, steroids, immu
nomodulating drugs, chemotherapeutic/immunosuppressive
agents, retinoids, mechanical devices, hyposensitization, immuno
therapy, food elimination trials, hypoallergenic diets, and miscel¬
laneous topical agents such as polyhydroxydine solution, tar, and
benzocaine containing creams.
