Mechanical Properties of Implantable Biomaterials 363
David F. Meaney
This article provides a comprehensive introduction to the termi¬
nology and methods of testing commonly used to describe the
mechanical properties of biomaterials. Specific characteristics of
natural materials are compared to those encountered with syn¬
thetics. The difficulties involved in mating natural and synthetic
substances to create a bioimplant then become apparent.
Mechanical Testing of Materials and the
Material Tissue Interface 385
Hisham R. Ashry and Adam S. Landsman
This article discusses various aspects of mechanical testing for
podiatric applications. Included is a brief overview of the termi¬
nology used to describe a variety of mechanical tests, suggestions
for the preparation and storage of specimens, and an overview
of various mechanical testing techniques that have been used to
collect data on internal fixation and osteotomy stability.
Clinical Experience with Two Component First Metatarsal
Phalangeal Joint Implants 403
Joshua Gerbert and Thomas J. Chang
The development of the two component implant systems has
generated considerable interest over the past 5 years. It is im

portant to critically document and record the clinical experiences
with these devices as they occur. The authors present an objective
evaluation of their early findings and comment on possible rec¬
ommendations for the future.
The Microscopic Interaction Between Silicone and the
Surrounding Tissues 415
Lisa Needelman
Biocompatibility is a pivotal issue in the use of any implantable
biomaterial. This article describes some of the issues surrounding
the use of silicone implants for first metatarsophalangeal joint
prostheses. The focus is on the interactions between the implant
and the surrounding tissues. Common histologic findings are also
discussed.
Economic Implications of Implant Selection 425
Donna J. DeFronzo, Adam S. Landsman, and
Janet A. Ghareeb
Numerous types of implantable biomaterials are available for a
variety of applications. Although much has been written about
the physical properties or biocompatibility issues, very few pa¬
pers have focused on the economic feasibility of these materials.
This article assesses financial factors associated with first metatar¬
sophalangeal total joint prostheses.
Implantable Bone Substitute Materials 437
Jason R. Hanft, Roy W. Sprinkle, Maria S. Surprenant, and
Matthew B. Werd
This article focuses on materials used as bone substitutes. The
materials may be used as substitutes for autografts or, in some
cases, along with autografts. Each material has unique properties
that may be beneficial for specific applications. Some future de¬
velopments in bone substitute materials are also discussed.
Metallic Implants Used in Foot Surgery 457
Thomas J. Chang, Matthew B. Werd, and Cherie Hovelsen
The search to find the ideal human implant that is physically
and biologically compatible with human tissue continues. Each
material has been found to have both strengths and weaknesses.
This article focuses on metallic implants currently in use and
metallic implants that may have future applications in foot and
ankle surgery.

Applications of Biodegradable Lactides and Glycolides
in Podiatry 475
K. A. Athanasiou, G. G. Niederauer, C. M. Agrawal, and
Adam S. Landsman
A comprehensive review of the clinical applications and the prop¬
erties of biodegradable lactide and glycolides is presented. Spe¬
cific podiatric and other orthopaedic applications of polylactic
acid, polyglycolic acid, and their copolymers are reviewed also.
The authors then discuss numerous biocompatibility studies, ba¬
sic manufacturing techniques, sterilizations/storage of the poly¬
mers, and the development of biodegradable polymers.
Musculoskeletal Applications of Hyaluronan and Hylan:
Potential Uses in the Foot and Ankle 497
Charles Weiss and Philip Band
Hyaluronan is unusual because it can be used as a highly biocom
patible and noninflammatory implant material with mechanical
properties that can be customized by altering the polymer con¬
figuration. This article suggests that there may be numerous
applications in the foot and ankle, including treatments for arthri¬
tis, soft tissue augmentation, and ulcerations.
Future Materials for Foot Surgery 519
Robert A. Latour, Jr
This article provides a summary of the clinical performance of
currently used biomaterials in bone fixation and joint replace¬
ment. The primary focus is on their inherent limitations. New
biomaterials and implant designs currently under development
are then presented. The most promising future materials for bone
fixation are considered to be fully bioabsorbable polymer matrix
composites, and the most promising materials for joint replace¬
ment are considered to be tissue engineered viable implants for
articular cartilage replacement. The successes and current prob¬
lems in each of these areas are discussed.
