David L. Morris
The History of IRM and SPA 191
Larry R. Corah
This article reviews the history of how the IRM was formed in
the United States, and what led to the development of the IRM
coordinating committee which ultimately was responsible for the
development of the Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA).
Specifically, activities, committees, people, and programs are re¬
viewed with an indication of how these impacted the formation
of IRM and where it is today.
Standardized Performance Analysis 199
Eddie D. Hamilton
This article covers the methodology used for calculating repro¬
duction and production performance for the Standardized Perfor¬
mance Analysis (SPA) reports. Computation, limitations, and in¬
terpretations of each measurement are discussed.
NCA IRM Desk Record 215
Dan Kniffen
Cost of production will remain the primary focus for the cattle
industry for years to come. Having accurate detailed records to
generate this information will improve the decision making pro¬
cess for managers. Certainly, the statement if you do not mea

sure it, you cannot manage it will be more evident in the
future. Providing good tools to record the measurements will be
important to the industry. The IRM will continue to work to fill
this need.
Farm Financial Standards 279
James M. McGrann
The Farm Financial Standards were developed by a national effort
to encourage standardization. Standardization includes financial
statement formats, terminology, and calculations for measuring
financial position and format. Comparative analysis and educa¬
tion efforts are enhanced greatly by standardization. The Stan¬
dardization Performance Analysis (SPA) system was developed
on the basis of the performance standards for beef cattle and
sheep enterprises. This article summarizes the Farm Financial
Standards and illustrates the calculations with a worksheet.
Measuring Financial Performance: An Overview of Financial
Statements 293
Norman L. Dalsted
The need for enhanced financial management skills and tech¬
niques is critical for management in this ever changing economic
environment. Knowledge of financial statements including their
preparation, purpose, and analysis attributes serve as a valuable
resource to the decision making process. The recommendations
of the Farm Financial Standards Task Force are key elements to
consistent preparation and evaluation of financial conditions of
any agricultural entity.
SPA: Marketing and Financial Performance Measures for the
Cow Calf Enterprise 313
Paul H. Gutierrez
The Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) process can be
an important business analysis activity. This article outlines the
important considerations in terms of the process, necessary data,
and interpretations and limitations of SPA measures of perfor¬
mance. A case ranch example is used to illustrate the SPA process.
Stocker/Feeder Cattle Standardized Performance Analysis 361
James M. McGrann and Jim McAdams
The Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) for stocker/feed
cattle is a recommended set of production and financial perfor¬
mance analysis guidelines developed specifically for the grazing,
growing, and finishing phases of beef cattle production. Guide¬
lines were developed by members of the National Cattlemen s
Association (NCA), Extension Specialists, and the National Inte¬
grated Resource Management Coordination Committee to pro

vide beef cattle producers with a comprehensive, standardized
means of measuring, analyzing, and reporting the performance
and profitability of an operation. This article describes and illus¬
trates through an example the performance measures chosen. The
NCA certifies software and education materials conforming to
the Stacker/Feeder Guidelines.
Seedstock Beef Cattle: SPA 375
James M. McGrann and Leland Leachman
The Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) for seedstock beef
cattle (SPA SB) is a recommended set of production and financial
performance analysis guidelines developed specifically for the
seedstock cow calf, replacement heifer, and the sale bull enter¬
prises. These guidelines were developed by members of the Na¬
tional Cattlemen s Association (NCA) and the National Integrated
Resource Management Coordinating Committee to provide beef
cattle producers with a comprehensive, standardized means of
measuring, analyzing, and reporting the performance and profit¬
ability of an operation. This article describes and illustrates
through an example the performance measures chosen. NCA
certifies software and education materials conforming to the Seed
stock SPA Guidelines.
