Program Notes for the Solo Tuba includes works for the tuba alone, tuba and piano, and tuba with other types of accompaniment - woodwind quartet, string quartet, orchestra, etc. Each entry gives the name of the publisher; the dates of composition, publication, and premiere; the titles of the movements; the instrumentation; the history of the piece; and a description of its musical structure and characteristics In a separate section, special attention is paid to five composers who have made major contributions to this repertoire - Paul Hindemith, Vincent Persichetti, Halsey Stevens, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Alec Wilder. In addition to the program notes for specific works, their lives and careers are traced in short biographies written by close colleagues. These profiles describe each composer's oeuvre and his impact on twentieth-century music in general.
