Zusammenfassung: | The publication of Webster's Third New International Dictionary in 1961 set off a storm of controversy both in the popular press and in scholarly journals that was virtually unprecedented in its scope and intensity. The New York Times ridiculed the new dictionary's alleged failure to label slang in a now-famous editorial that began, "A passel of double-domes at the G. & C Merriam Company joint in Springfield, Mass., have been confabbing and yakking for twenty-seven years...and now they have finalized...a new edition of a swell and esteemed book." The attack was joined by Life magazine, the Saturday Review, the Atlantic, the New Yorker, and other magazines and newspapers across the country. Critics charged that Webster's Third had abandoned its responsibility to uphold standards of good English and that it would encourage permissiveness in the teaching of English. Rejoinders by the dictionary's editor, Philip Babcock Gove, and sympathetic journalists and scholars had little effect |

spelling | Morton, Herbert C. Verfasser aut The story of Webster's third Philip Gove's controversial dictionary and its critics Herbert C. Morton 1. publ. Cambridge u.a. Cambridge Univ. Press 1994 XV, 332 S. Ill. txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier The publication of Webster's Third New International Dictionary in 1961 set off a storm of controversy both in the popular press and in scholarly journals that was virtually unprecedented in its scope and intensity. Rejoinders by the dictionary's editor, Philip Babcock Gove, and sympathetic journalists and scholars had little effect Gove, Philip Babcock Gove, Philip Babcock <1902-1972> Gove, Philip Babcock 1902-1972 Gove, Philip Babcock 1902-1972 (DE-588)119323974 gnd rswk-swf Webster's third new international dictionary of the English language unabridged Webster's third new international dictionary of the English language unabridged (DE-588)4375266-4 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1961 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1961-1965 gnd rswk-swf Anglais (Langue) - Lexicographie Engels gtt Lexicografie gtt Woordenboeken gtt Englisch Geschichte Encyclopedias and dictionaries History and criticism English language Lexicography History 20th century Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Sprachverfall (DE-588)4233534-6 gnd rswk-swf Amerikanisches Englisch (DE-588)4094804-3 gnd rswk-swf Ideologie (DE-588)4026486-5 gnd rswk-swf Sprachkritik (DE-588)4056475-7 gnd rswk-swf Lexikografie (DE-588)4035548-2 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4066724-8 Wörterbuch gnd-content Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Lexikografie (DE-588)4035548-2 s Sprachverfall (DE-588)4233534-6 s Ideologie (DE-588)4026486-5 s Geschichte 1961-1965 z DE-604 Webster's third new international dictionary of the English language unabridged (DE-588)4375266-4 u Sprachkritik (DE-588)4056475-7 s DE-188 Amerikanisches Englisch (DE-588)4094804-3 s Geschichte 1961 z Gove, Philip Babcock 1902-1972 (DE-588)119323974 p http://www.loc.gov/catdir/description/cam026/94005056.html Publisher description http://www.loc.gov/catdir/toc/cam029/94005056.html Table of contents |
