adam_text | Introduction 7
Part One: Demographics
1 POPULATION 12
For over 200 years the U.S. population has been moving
southward and westward. At the end of the 20th century
it is also getting older.
2 THE MULTI CULTURE 14
Race in America is no longer a matter of black and
white. As complexity grows, both categories and
language become more inadequate.
3 WORLD NATION 16
People from Asia and other parts of the Americas have
replaced Europeans as the prominent newcomers.
4 ELBOW ROOM 18
Outside the Northeast, Americans enjoy a roominess
experienced in few countries.
5 ON THE MOVE 20
Americans move more often than most other people in
the world.
6 SUB URBAN AMERICA 22
Three quarters of the population is urban, but what
Americans call cities probably seem like suburbs to
foreign eyes.
Part Two: Economy
7 MANUFACTURING 26
While output continues to rise, a quarter of a million
manufacturing jobs are lost every year.
8 FARMING 28
Farm output is still rising but farms, home to 40 percent
of Americans a century ago, now house less than
2 percent of the population.
9 FINANCE 30
In 1991 the product of finance, insurance and real estate
(FIRE) surpassed that of manufacturing, with only a
fraction of the workforce. That makes FIRE workers the
economy s most productive whatever it is they
produce.
CONTENTS
10 TRADE ROUTES 32
In 1992, before NAFTA, more than a quarter of all U.S.
trade was with Canada and Mexico. The largest U.S.
trade deficits were with Japan and China.
11 THE SEARCH FOR PROFIT 34
For long the world s leading foreign investor, the U.S. is
now also a leading investee. U.S. multinationals abroad
are more profitable than foreign owned firms in the
U.S.
12 WINNERS AND LOSERS 36
The boom years of the 1980s were followed by record
breaking insolvencies in the 1990s. By 1993 the gloom
began to lift and the pace of new business formation
took off.
13 SHADES OF GREEN 38
The states with the most ravaged environments can be
found in the industrial Midwest and the South; the least
ravaged, in the West and New England.
14 LABOR 40
Forty years ago unions represented almost a third of the
U.S. labor force and wages were among the highest in
the world. Now the U.S. is one of the least unionized
countries of the rich world and wages are falling.
15 WOMEN WORKING 42
In the early 1990s nearly 60 percent of all women were
in the labor force, almost double the share in 1950.
16 PERSONAL INCOME 44
Incomes are often most unequal in affluent states
housing the super rich.
17 TAXES 46
Some state and local governments claim little more
than 10 percent of personal income as tax though
they may soak their poorer residents At the federal
level, the 1993 reforms boosted taxes on the rich and
helped the working poor.
18 THE PROMISED LAND 48
The U S has more poor and near poor than any other
rich country and the smallest middle class
Part Three: Society
19 A START IN LIFE 52
The Southwest has more newborns than any other
region, while the South has the highest share of infant
mortality and babies born with seriously low weight.
20 FAMILIES 54
The rate of marriage has changed little since the 1960s,
while the rate of divorce has doubled. Many more
people now live alone or as single parent families.
21 LITERACY AND LEARNING 56
Despite higher levels of formal education, in the early
1990s only one in five Americans reached a high
standard of literacy.
22 A MODERN PLAGUE 58
More than 80 percent of Americans with AIDS live in
large cities but the rate of increase in AIDS is higher
in many rural states.
23 THE COSTS OF CARE 60
The U.S. spends more on health care than any other
country in the world.
24 ABORTION 62
Most abortions take place in metropolitan areas, in
particular on the coasts. Beyond large cities, providers
can be hard to find.
25 GAYS AND THE LAW 64
Most Americans support civil rights for lesbians and
gay men, who in many places have legal protection. But
a backlash is brewing.
26 THE FAT OF THE LAND 66
Snack consumption and obesity continue to rise.
Paradoxically, American eating habits are also
becoming healthier.
27 CRIME 68
The ranks of the imprisoned are growing far faster than
the crime rate. U.S. crime and incarceration rates are
the highest in the industrial world.
28 SANCTIONED KILLING 70
Besides Japan, the U.S. is the only first world country
that executes ordinary criminals. Death row populations
are growing far more rapidly than the executioners can
do their work.
29 IN GOD WE TRUST 72
Six out of seven Americans are Christians. Most religious
diversity is Christian diversity.
30 THE CONSCIOUSNESS INDUSTRY 74
U.S. media ownership is slipping into fewer and fewer
hands. Meanwhile, the media companies are moving to a
national, even global reach.
Part Four: Government
31 ALL POLITICS IS LOCAL 78
There are more than 86,000 governments in the U.S., or
one for every 3,000 Americans. Many are non elected.
32 THE PERMANENT GOVERNMENT 80
Presidents come and go, but the lawyers, lobbyists, and
campaign contributors who make America run the
permanent government are always with us.
33 THE ELECTED GOVERNMENT 82
Between 1980 and 1992, the swing to the Democrats in
Presidential elections was just 2 percent. The major
gains were made by the independent candidate.
34 DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA 84
The voting rate of Americans is one of the lowest in the
rich world.
35 THE PENTAGON 86
By 1998, following 1993 announcements, U.S. military
spending s share of the economy will be less than half
what it was in 1970.
