Zusammenfassung:Scientific literacy depends upon children's early engagement in science. It is in the elementary school years that teachers have an opportunity to cultivate and nourish their students' innate curiosity about the world. Well-taught science classes help give students the skills to investigate problems logically and systematically and make informed decisions based on evidence - skills that can serve young people the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, many teachers are ill-prepared to teach these classes. Drawing on the knowledge and experience of a panel of leaders in elementary education and in science education and the results of a survey of 142 teacher education programs, editors Senta A. Raizen and Arie M. Michelsohn offer a new vision for preparing prospective teachers of grades K through six in science content and pedagogy - a vision that will transform teachers from people who merely pass on someone else's knowledge to creative facilitators of children's learning through involvement in the process of science investigation. The authors include a three-part interchangeable model for preparing teachers in science, and they outline the basics of what prospective elementary school teachers need to learn in science courses and in science pedagogy courses, including fundamental underlying concepts, habits of mind, and effective instructional strategies. The recommended courses and programs will arm teachers with powerful tools necessary for a true understanding of science learning in children.
