tribute this distinctiveness to inherent characteristics of American society. On the
contrary, she demonstrates, the American labor movement had much in common
with its English and French counterparts for most of the nineteenth century. Only
with the collapse of the Knights of Labor, the largest American labor organization
of the century, did the U.S. movement take a different path.
Building on an extensive body of archival research,
Voss
uncovers the conditions
behind both the Knights of Labor s early success in organizing broad sectors of the
American working class and its ultimate failure to survive. Combining case studies
of Knights locals in New Jersey with innovative statistical analysis, she shows that
the Knights initially built on its ability to mobilize community ties to overcome
hostility between skilled and less-skilled workers. The resulting alliances were
similar to those that helped broaden the social base and political horizons of the
labor movement across the Atlantic. In the United States, however, these new
alliances were to collapse along with the Knights.
Voss
identifies as the major
reason for the Knights defeat the formation of powerful employers associations in
response to the union s early victories and rapid growth. Employers associations in
the United States had the resources to organize more quickly than their counter¬
parts elsewhere, and they were not restrained by an activist central government.

relations scholars, and social, economic, and labor historians.
