address to members of both Houses
of Parliament in Cape Town.
It is this realization that makes
Professor Van Jaarsveld s compelling
book, more than a historical textbook.
In describing the awakening of Afri¬
kaner Nationalism, he has been able
to draw from documents which are
probably more abundant in South
Africa than in any other African
country. Thus this book does not only
deal with the first of the African
nationalisms, but it also provides
documentation for every statement,
strengthening the line of the author s
reasoning.
This is a book of indisputable his¬
torical importance. At the same time,
however, it is presented in such a
manner as to grip the attention of
any intelligent layman as well. As a
German reviewer said of the Afri¬
kaans original: The clarity of writing
and the author s ability lucidly to pre¬
sent important points are particularly
striking.
