Michael Hamburger
* That strange literature . . /. The epithet
is Carlyle’s, who more than any other
English writer made German literature not
only acceptable, but highly influential in
this country for a few decades. One purpose
of iVfr Hamburger’s seven studies of German
writers, ranging from Hölderlin, Novalis
and Kleist at the beginning of the nineteenth
century, to Dr Gottfried Benn in our own
time, is to show why so much of German
literature is strange, and why that strange-
ness is a source both of strength and of
danger. One outstanding characteristic of
most modern German writers is that they
create the world anew; and it is the conflict
between ‘Reason and Energy’ that has
driven many of them to extreme resorts.
These studies are designed to serve as
introductions to each writer’s work, except
for the opening chapter on Hölderlin which
presupposes some general acquaintance with
the poet and includes a translation and in-
terpretation of the newly discovered poem
Friedensfeier. The author provides English
renderings of the extensive quotations in
prose and verse on which his argument
rests.
