| adam_text | Cantonese (or General Cantonese), with about

million speakers as a world
language, is spoken in China, particularly in the eastern Pearl River delta, in Hong
Kong, and elsewhere by the Chinese diaspora, particularly in Macao, South-East
Asia, and certain cities in North America, Britain, Australia and New Zealand.

Yue and Cantonese.

Phoneme inventory and romanization: There is
as yet no standard system of Cantonese romanization, and practice has been haphazard
since the 19th century. Simplification of various statements on Cantonese to produce
an abstract, practical, economical and elegant phonological system. The
corresponding romanization system takes into account all previous systems and
reflects the main features of the phonological system. It is easy to operate and should
be of benefit to all future scholars of Cantonese linguistics.

Problems of studying
Chinese morphology: the written character and its citation form; radical, syllable,
sound segment and prosodies; morpheme and word; various interpretations of lexical
meaning. Particles and affixes.
(4)
Morphology: noun, classifier, adjective, pronoun,
numeral, verb, and adverb. Aspect, negation and interrogation in the adjective and
verb. Reduplication and tone modification as morphological devices. Operation of the
honorific system.
(5)
Syntax: noun, classifier, modal, adjective and verb phrases;
relativization; aspect, modality, adverbial function, negation, and interrogation;
clause particles and clause intonation. Problems of homophony.
(6)
Clauses: Elements
of clause structure and the order of components. Valency. Reassessment of the often
quoted theory that Cantonese has a direct object-indirect object word order. What the
prevailing theory has failed to take into account is that the order of direct object vis-
vis indirect object depends on various factors concerning the syntactic composition of
objects, the lexical choice of verbs and their valency, and discourse-related
considerations such as focus and emphasis of speaker. Voice: relationship to changes
in valency; agent/patient roles.

Clause chaining: conjunction and subordination.
The sentence as an element of discourse. Intonation, conjunctions, and particles in
sentences and in discourse.

The text for analysis is a traditional story retold by the
author (as to an adult) in a formal conversational narrative style, the para in direct
speed) providing examples of more colloquial speech.
