Above all, here is a text that fulfils the plurals of the title: a book about William Morel as well as his younger brother Paul. The parents' blazing rows are presented in full, and the sexual encounters remind the reader how far the author was ahead of his time - some can surprise, even shock us now. Eighty years on, the novel is finally freed from interference and distortion with this complete and authoritative text.
