Zusammenfassung: | While Montesquieu was praising indifference to financial gain, Louis XV regularly presided over dizzying gambling games at Versailles. While Descartes was advancing a strategy for escaping from chance by appealing to the protocols of certainty, clandestine gambling operations in Paris numbered in the hundreds. Despite efforts by the major figures of the French Enlightenment to suppress the period's fascination with chance, high-stakes gambling was an integral part of the social rituals of the most influential groups within the ancien regime In Enlightenment and the Shadows of Chance, Thomas Kavanagh explores this important paradox to shed light on the genesis, development, and function of the eighteenth-century French novel. First considering the roles of chance and gambling in the epistemological, social, and economic histories of the period, Kavanagh shows that doctrines of chance played a denied yet operative role in important aspects of what the French Enlightenment proclaimed itself to be. He then looks at representations of chance in the novels of Prechac, Prevost, Voltaire, Denon, Crebillon, and Diderot, and shows how they tell two stories: that of a deterministic and ordered universe, and that of a world of fortuitous events determined only by chance. It was the tension and interplay between these two poles, Kavanagh argues, that contributed in an important way to the development of the Enlightenment's ideal of the rational man |

Press 1993 XIII, 271 S. txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier While Montesquieu was praising indifference to financial gain, Louis XV regularly presided over dizzying gambling games at Versailles. It was the tension and interplay between these two poles, Kavanagh argues, that contributed in an important way to the development of the Enlightenment's ideal of the rational man Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1700-1800 gnd rswk-swf Frans gtt Gokken gtt Hasard dans la littérature Jeux de hasard dans la littérature Littérature et société - France - Histoire - 18e siècle Roman français - 18e siècle - Histoire et critique Romans gtt Siècle des lumières - France Verlichting (cultuurgeschiedenis) gtt Französisch Geschichte Chance in literature Enlightenment France French fiction 18th century History and criticism Gambling in literature Literature and society France History 18th century Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 gnd rswk-swf Glücksspiel (DE-588)4021329-8 gnd rswk-swf Zufall (DE-588)4068050-2 gnd rswk-swf Spiel (DE-588)4056218-9 gnd rswk-swf Aufklärung (DE-588)4003524-4 gnd rswk-swf Französisch (DE-588)4113615-9 gnd rswk-swf Frankreich Französisch (DE-588)4113615-9 s Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 s Glücksspiel (DE-588)4021329-8 s Geschichte 1700-1800 z DE-604 Zufall (DE-588)4068050-2 s Aufklärung (DE-588)4003524-4 s Spiel (DE-588)4056218-9 s DE-188 HBZ Datenaustausch application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=005413487&sequence=000002&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
