Zusammenfassung: | Building upon his pioneering investigation of the colors of thin films, Isaac Newton developed two influential theories, one on the structure of matter, explaining the colors of bodies, and the other on fits, describing the periodicity of light. Professor Alan Shapiro, editor of The Optical Papers of Isaac Newton, recounts the development of these theories based on his study of Newton's unpublished manuscripts, and analyzes their experimental foundation. He also shows the essential role that Newton's philosophy of science played in the formulation and reception of these theories The second part of the book describes a vigorous dispute over Newton's theory of colored bodies waged by physicists and chemists for nearly fifty years, from the late eighteenth to the early nineteenth century. Professor Shapiro's analysis of this previously unknown dispute and of the reasons for the chemists' attack on Newton's theory illuminates the nature and relation of physics and chemistry during this seminal period of their development |

Cambridge u.a. Cambridge Univ. Press 1993 XVII, 400 S. graph. Darst. txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier Building upon his pioneering investigation of the colors of thin films, Isaac Newton developed two influential theories, one on the structure of matter, explaining the colors of bodies, and the other on fits, describing the periodicity of light. Professor Shapiro's analysis of this previously unknown dispute and of the reasons for the chemists' attack on Newton's theory illuminates the nature and relation of physics and chemistry during this seminal period of their development Newton, Isaac <1642-1727> ram Newton, Isaac <Sir, 1642-1727> / Opticks Newton, Isaac <Sir, 1642-1727> Opticks Newton, Isaac 1643-1727 (DE-588)118587544 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1664-1833 gnd rswk-swf Chimie physique et théorique Chimie physique et théorique ram Couleur - Histoire Couleurs - Histoire ram Interférence (Optique) - Histoire Interférence (optique) - Histoire ram Kleurtheorie gtt Lichttheorie gtt Lumière - Histoire ram Lumière, Théorie corpusculaire de la - Histoire Geschichte Chemistry, Physical and theoretical Color History Interference (Light) History Light, Corpuscular theory of History Farbenlehre (DE-588)4113517-9 gnd rswk-swf Farbe (DE-588)4016443-3 gnd rswk-swf Licht (DE-588)4035596-2 gnd rswk-swf Interferenz Physik (DE-588)4162000-8 gnd rswk-swf Korpuskulartheorie (DE-588)4338253-8 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 gnd rswk-swf Optik (DE-588)4043650-0 gnd rswk-swf Physikalische Chemie (DE-588)4045959-7 gnd rswk-swf Absorptionsspektroskopie (DE-588)4141129-8 gnd rswk-swf Licht (DE-588)4035596-2 s Korpuskulartheorie (DE-588)4338253-8 s Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 s DE-604 Farbenlehre (DE-588)4113517-9 s Interferenz Physik (DE-588)4162000-8 s Farbe (DE-588)4016443-3 s Physikalische Chemie (DE-588)4045959-7 s Absorptionsspektroskopie (DE-588)4141129-8 s Newton, Isaac 1643-1727 (DE-588)118587544 p Optik (DE-588)4043650-0 s Geschichte 1664-1833 z HEBIS Datenaustausch application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=005388510&sequence=000002&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
