PREFACE
This is a book that collects in one volume some of the best
contemporary thinking about the relationship between movies and
politics The editor has included the word dynamic in the title because
he wants to communicate the sense that the relationship under study is
fluid, charged, and transactional To that end, he attempted to recruit the
best talent available to illuminate the plural dynamics of movies and
politics Too, an effort has been made to give some organization and
direction to this area of inquiry, in the hope that both academic scholars
who study film and those in the film industry, including reviewers, will
be more acutely aware of the political dimension of film A previous
effort by the editor for Garland, American Political Movies, was a brief
filmography of feature films of political significance The scope and
perspective of this volume is obviously much more eclectic, giving the
reader an idea of the various ways that movies and politics may be
usefully viewed After this, it will then remain for future scholars and
other students of the movies to expand the horizons of theory and
research into a fascinating if mercurial political relationship The nature
of the transaction between art and society has bedeviled inquirers for a
long time, and hopefully the present effort will help in some small way
to demystify a specific form of that relationship, the world of power and
the world of motion-picture art The interested reader is not only the
final judge of whether we have succeeded, but also is the one who is
charged with sustaining in the future the intellectual curiosity about
studying the relationship between what is going on up on the screen and
what is going on out in the world
