Summary:"This is the first novel to come out of Northern Ireland showing the human side of a conflict that has puzzled the world. Naomi May has lived for many years in Belfast ans accurately catches the feelings, conversations and attitudes of the people of Ulster. Her characters are varied: Catherine Mulholland comes from the old Protestant aristocracy while her husband, John, belongs to the Unionist industrial middle class - the employers; others again are Civil Right workers from the Catholic intelligentsia and, finally, there is the divided working class. The novel enables readers outside Ulster to understand the background to the events and why they happened; for Ulster people themselves this is a record of their experience, with particular insight into the role and attitudes of the military and civil administration from London. But above all it is the human story of Catherine and her husband and the tensions between their different backgrounds, of intrigues and a love affair that reflects the urgency of a society which is being destroyed. Terrorism and its distinguished novel that is always compulsive reading; set against a background of rising tensions before and during the events of the last years, it gives additional excitement and understanding to the reader."
