The three major sections follow the input, process, output model of a system. There is a general overview of the criminal justice system and the scope of the crime problem, a critical examination of historical perspectives; contemporary issues; the current state-of-the-art and the interrelationships of the police, law, the courts, and the correction-related elements of the criminal justice system. The section on the police subsystem discusses federal, state and local policing, management and support specialists, and operational specialist and generalist components. The section on criminal law and the courts considers the historical perspectives of the systems, moral considerations and law, courts in the united states, and the trial process. A survey of constitutional principles is also presented. The final section on corrections examines the development of corrections, jails and detention, probation, parole and other release procedures, correctional institutions and the institutional society, community-based corrections and the criminal justice system.
