The first detailed and chronological account of the
work of the influential Russian
littérateur
and
historiographer who gave his name to the so-called
"Karamzin Period" of Russian literature
The career of
N.
M. Karamzin, an outstanding figure in
Russian cultural and literary life at the end of the eighteenth
century and beginning of the nineteenth, falls into two
distinct periods: literary and historical. The division is based
on the nature of his writings and studies.
A. G. Cross in this volume skillfully delineates the develop¬
ments in Karamzin's literary work and the influence he came
to exert on his contemporaries.

M. Karamzin: A Study of
His Literary Career
(1783-1803)
opens with a detailed account
of the Russian's early years of apprenticeship, an analysis of
the formative influences on him during his school years and
his membership in the Moscow Society of Freemasons, and
a discussion of his wide reading in European literature. All
Karamzin early work—translations, original writings in prose
and verse, his joint editorship of the children's journal,
Children's Reading for the Mind and Heart— is discussed in
turn and new attributions are made. The importance of the
early work for his subsequent development is emphasized.
The period of Karamzin's literary eminence begins with
his return from extensive travels in Europe and his publica¬
tion of the Moscow Journal. Mr. Cross analyzes Karamzin's
achievement as an editor of Moscow's first sentimental
journal, dwelling on his activities as a literary critic, creative
writer, translator, and organizer of contemporary literary
forces. His literary fame rests principally on his short stories
and the account of his journeys abroad, Letters of a Russian
Traveler. Separate chapters are devoted to these, and in them
Mr. Cross establishes Karamzin's attainments in prose fic¬
tion. Further chapters are concerned with Karamzin's work
in the 1790's and

the evolution and crisis in his
philosophy, interests, and techniques shown on the basis of
his successive publication of literary almanacs, collections
of verse, a pantheon of translations, and contributions to
the Moscow News during a period of social and political
regression in the last years of Catherine the Great and
throughout the reign of Paul I.
The final chapters deal with the nineteenth-century
Karamzin, illustrating the change in his interests, as marked
in the journal the Messenger of Europe which, compared
with the Moscow Journal, was preeminently apolitical rather
than a literary journal. As Mr. Cross says, "This journal was
the messenger of European affairs to the degree that Euro¬
pean experience could demonstrate, negatively or positively,
a course for Russian development; it is essentially the testa¬
ment of a man who had learnt and taken much from western
culture but who now felt the tide to be turning and wished
to encourage Russians to an awareness of their greatness
and potential."
The present work is primarily devoted to a study of

Karamzin's literary career, specifically to the work he pro¬
duced between
1783,
the date of his first published transla¬
tion, and
1803,
at the end of which year he completed his
editorship of the influential Messenger of Europe and in his
own words "entered the temple of history," after his appoint¬
ment as Royal Historiographer.
An appendix of the works Karamzin reviewed for the
Moscow Journal and a detailed bibliography which encom¬
passes in particular studies on Karamzin published in this
century, up to
1968,
are included here. Mr. Cross has made
an invaluable contribution to the rapidly expanding field of
East European studies for scholars and students, and readers
of Russian literature will find their background knowledge
of the period vastly enriched. |
