There is a fairly widespread belief
among philosophers that the libertarian
interpretation of freedom of choice (as
involving randomness) is incompatible
with the fact that we are responsible for
the actions we have chosen. By investi-
gating the interrelated notions of causal
connection, chance and responsibility
for action, the author shows that this
opinion rests on a confusion. So far from
being inconsistent with responsibility,
the element of chance, which most
libertarians recognize, actually entails
responsibility. The author bases this
conclusion upon a radical reinter-
pretation of some of our most elementary
physical and psychological concepts;
and in discussing this, provides a
lively re-examination of the notions of
determinacy, causality and free will.
