The first generation of histories of women in America, written in the 1970s, focused on the private sphere of home and domestic affairs, thereby inadvertently perpetuating women’s separation from the larger arena of public power and politics. Now, Sara Evans has written an extraordinary history of American women, from the indigenous Indian woman of the sixteenth-century wilderness to the dual role career woman and mother of the 1980s, which integrates their story into the larger narrative of our nation’s experience. Since colonial times, says Evans, American women have continually reshaped the bound aries between the private sphere of home and family life and the structured, official public arena of citizenship and political action. Their struggle to situate themselves and their con cerns in the civic life of American society resulted in a vast elaboration of voluntary activities and organizations that women cre ated and sustained. It was through these female associations that women could re fashion domestic, ethnic, and religious tradi tions and values into tools of change and democratic action. Evans explores women’s political influence and practices over the sweep of centuries, from the Puritan “good wife”’s power of moral and social censure and the republican mother’s nurturance of young citizens to the female voluntary associations and women’s rights movement that trans formed domestic roles into more formal, visible public efforts. In so doing, women changed the meaning of public life itself, expanding their domestic and even sexual intimacies into public
crusades for improved health, education, and welfare. Bringing to center stage the richness and diversity of women’s lives as pioneers, slaves, immigrants, factory workers, and suburban mothers and housewives, Evans reinterprets American womanhood as well as our notions of political participation and active cit izenship. Moreover, by demonstrating the con tinuing vitality of free community and public (Continued on back Пар)
(Continued from front Пар) spaces in which women are learning the skills and exploring the possibilities of effective civic action, Evans points toward the latent resources for a revitalized democracy in the nation’s third century. Sara Evans’ history, triumphantly establishing women’s rightful place in our nation’s past and present, brings a message of hope and promise to all Americans.
