VVIUUUVVSUIM
This collection of extracts, with notes and exer¬
cises, is divided into two parts. The first deals
with the study of language, and provides the
student with an introduction to the basic prin¬
ciples: the second deals with language teaching
in general, arjd English language teaching in
particular. The extracts have been all taken from
the works of British and American linguists and
methodologists. Each part is subdivided, the first
into three sections (the form, the substance, and
the use of language), and the second into two
sections (the preparation and the presentation
of teaching materials). Within each section the
extracts are arranged to provide a gradual devel¬
opment of the main theme. The author s aim for
the whole book has been to give teachers of
English, teacher-trainers, and students of English
in colleges of education abroad modern ideas
about language and language teaching, and to
make sure, by means of notes and exercises, that
these ideas and their implications are thoroughly
understood and can be applied.
