xiv Contents Free Reading Friday, and negative ones, such as written and oral book reports, are discussed in relation to this overarching purpose and to the other purposes derived from it. The place of literary history and literary biography in the English classroom is also analyzed. 6 The Structure of Literature Defines the structure of literature in three ways: the form a work takes, its content, and the relationships among its parts. The implications of each of these in the secondary school English classroom are the principal considerations of this chapter. 7 An Evaluative Approach to Literature Suggests that an evaluative approach to literature that allows the students to make critical judgments is one each teacher of English should have among his repertory of strategies. Criteria for judgment may be those included in this discussion or those developed in the English classroom. Censorship in the classroom and the selection of literary works are also discussed in this chapter. 8 A Value-Centered Approach to the Study of Literature Argues that if literature is to be relevant in the lives of students, its teachers must strive for classroom confrontations between the values in literature and those held by students. Numerous methods and examples of the value-centered approach are given. 9 Problems in the Teaching of Literature Deals briefly with several important aspects of the teaching of literature: retarded and reluctant readers; the use of readings in common and individualized reading; the teaching of a long work, like a novel or play; the teaching of poetry; and the teaching of nonfiction. io Written Composition: Purposes and Practices Introduces the subject of composition with a discussion of its purposes, both those of the teacher and those of his students. Important
Contents xv research in the teaching of composition is cited. A final section considers the differences between written and oral composition. ii Classroom Approaches to Written Composition Offers specific classroom tactics useful in teaching students how to write whole compositions, paragraphs, and sentences. i2 Composition Evaluation Suggests several different methods of evaluating student writing, including the useful scorecard approach. Also discussed are negative practices in grading student themes. 13 Selected Issues in the Teaching of Composition Discusses the following aspects of secondary school composition programs: research papers, in-class themes, creative writing, and letter writing. 14 Language Study: Grammar and Usage Focuses on the teaching of grammar and usage. Special attention is given to traditional, structural, and transformational grammars. i£ Language Study: Semantics, Dialects, History, and Vocabulary Discusses the teaching of four important but often neglected areas of language study: semantics, dialects, history, and vocabulary. 16 Oral Activities in the English Class Focuses on the purposes of oral activities in the English program and discusses a number of such activities. y Mass Media and the Teaching of English Explores the many benefits to be derived from a study of the mass media in the English classroom.
