The book analyses the processes by which Trinidad became a
plantation colony based on African slave labour, then a British
colony (after
1797)
but with a population oriented towards France and
Spain. After the slaves emancipation, Trinidad entered a period of
rapid development when people from many countries
-
Europeans,
Africans, West Indians, Venezuelans, Chinese and, above all,
Indians
-
came to the island to live and work, making the population
even more heterogeneous. At the end of the nineteenth century,
Tobago was linked administratively to Trinidad. From
1900
to
I960
the united colony moved towards political decolonization and
economic development based on the expanding oil industry.
Independence came in
1962
under the leadership of the Peoples
National Movement.
This book is intended for A level and university students and their
teachers in both the Caribbean and in other countries. Its narrative
qualities will attract readers in the Caribbean, Britain and-North
America interested in the history of the West Indies.
