Discrimination is taking a heavy economic toll in America, in addition to its
much-discussed social consequences. This forward-looking volume presents
the words of President Richard M. Nixon, the late Robert F. Kennedy, econo-
mists Alan B. Batchelder and Andrew F. Brimmer, and sixteen other experts
who measure the costs of discrimination and outline ways to overcome it.
In his introductory essay, John F, Kain evaluates the historical and
contemporary factors that are responsible for the present economic condition
of the Negro American. The other articles in the book reveal the debilitating
economic effects of racial discrimination in the labor market, in housing, and
in education, and examine the attitudes of bhcks and whites toward civil
rights and integration. As the editor points out, the economic heritage of the
black American underscores the pressing need for “special and unusual
efforts” to end forever economic prejudice against the blachman in our society.
