Abstract
This paper uses the pottery from two megalithic tombs from west Scania to discuss the
methods of deposition and the chronology of the region. The pottery is grouped
chronologically mainly through techniques of decoration. The evidence from two
tombs is compared, and is shown to have two chronological emphases. The investiga-
tion is then expanded with the analysis of other tombs which have been excavated within
the same region. The chronological variations in the depositions are taken as the starting
point for hypotheses about the chronology of the use of monuments for burials and
offerings. From this the perspective is widened to include conclusions about settlement
patterns within the region and possible hierarchy among the graves. The pattern of
deposition in the tombs of west Scania is different from that which appears to be charac-
teristic of other more westerly parts of south Scandinavia. The variations are significant
for the interpretation of customs of deposition in the Middle Neolithic, and their
development.
