From the earliest days of Islam, all true
believers have been under obligation to make
the journey to Makkah at least once in their
lifetime, provided their circumstances
allowed.
In past centuries, and almost within'living
memory, the. pilgrims had to endure either a
long and dangerous sea voyage, or the blaz¬
ing heat of the Arabian desert
-
offering
thirst, hunger, and risk of attack. Some
walked, others rode on camels or on horse¬
back, in response to the powerful call to make
the pilgrimage.
From every part of the Islamic world, the
routes converged on Makkah. In many cases
they followed the ancient spice routes and the
pre-Islamic caravan routes. These ancient
caravan trails were improved to help the
pilgrims on their way. One road, however,
stands out above all the rest. It is known
simply as the
Darb Zubaydah -
or Zubay-
dah's Road
-
in memory of the wife of the
'Abbãsid
caliph
Hãrun
al-Rashïd.
Zubaydah
was the principal of many benefactors who
endowed the route and funded its works.
The route is the most impressive engineer¬
ing achievement in the ancient Islamic world,
and rivals the great roads of the Roman
Empire. It continued in use until within
living memory, when new, paved roads and
the aeroplane consigned the route to the
desert and to history.
At many places of settlement on the
Darb
Zubaydah, we can penetrate beneath the skin
of the desert to discover how the pilgrims
lived and journeyed and how they were
provided for along the route. An archaeologi¬
cal team from King
Saud
University, Riyadh,
had been excavating one such site since
1979.
It is the early Islamic settlement of al-
Rabadhah, which lies in the desert, more
than
200
kilometres south-east of Madinah.
The site was identified as a result of the
work carried out in recent years by geogra¬
pher and historian, Shaykh Hamad
al-Jãsir,
and also by
Dr Sa'ad
al-Rãshid,
a specialist in
Islamic archaeology from King
Saud
Univer¬
sity, the leader of the archaeological team
from the University, and author of this
fascinating portrait of early Islamic civilisa¬
tion in Saudi Arabia. |
