In The Theme of Time in the Poetry of
Anna Axmatova I make an attempt to ap¬
proach the work of Axmatova from the
point of view of the role which is played
in it by the theme of time and its artistic
expression throughout the various stages of
the poet s development. I start from the hy¬
pothesis that the recurrent preoccupation of
the lyrical

of Axmatova s poetry with
complex temporal relationships in her ex¬
perience and consciousness forms one of the
principal elements that determine the organic
coherence of the whole of the poet s
œuvre.
The difference between the early and the
late Axmatova may be seen to lie in a
change of emphasis: temporal motifs that
play already a significant part in the evoca¬
tion of the intimate world of the I of
the earliest books come more clearly to the
foreground as the central themes of her work
from the thirties onwards. The first chapter
contains a new approach to the early Axma¬
tova: her books from
Večer
to Anno Domini
axe considered from the point of view of the
role which is played in them by various
semantic fields which are connected with
the characteristic temporal awareness of the
heroine . Three essential aspects are to be
distinguished in her time experience: a. her
awareness of the complex and often tragic
interconnections between the various tem¬
poral strata of her intimate biography;
b. the preservation of time through art, both
her own and that of others;

her sense
of the historical time of the nation to which
she belongs. In the subsequent chapters the
further, gradually more abstract and ob¬
jectifying development of the temporal
themes and motifs in the work of the later
Axmatova are discussed and analysed in de¬
tail. The temporal approach not only
enables me to elucidate the structure of
many of her most obscure works, but also
gives me an opportunity to analyse the or¬
ganic relationships between the various
phases of the growth of Axmatova s artistic
consciousness.
