During the last decades interna¬
tional literary interest has been fo-
cussed in
Čechov,
and from this a
rapidly increasing flow of publications
on his person resulted. In curious
contrast with such publicity is the
character of
Čechov
himself, who
always was so averse to any clamour
about his work or his significance.
Even though he frequently gave an
opinion on the literary productions of
both himself and others, he yet used
to avoid complexity. His remarks may
often be pungent and intelligent, but
they seldom show originality or sub¬
tleness. His lighthearted juvenile
works he wrote, according to his own
expression, mechanically , without
bothering too much about nature,
contents or meaning of what was
written. Nor did he, in his riper
years, ever theorize on background,
deeper sense or literary form of his
works. The notable thing about it
is, however, that at present specialists
all over the world, often great minds
too, go into
Čechov s
art, his state¬
ments, and his importance; which no
doubt is indicative of his universally
human character.
The wish to commemorate
Čechov s
100th birthday has prompted publi¬
cation of the present collection. The
method adopted has been to call upon
various authorities on the theme, who
all treat some particular aspect of
Čechov
s
work and personality. Among
those rank some historians of litera¬
ture internationally held in high re¬
pute. Thus the volume is neither a
Festschrift nor a collection of hymns
of praise to
Čechov,
but it contains
some twenty essays, from nine coun¬
tries and written in English, German,
Russian or French.
A Soviet historian of literature
states his views of Truth and faith
with
Čechov ,
while a French paper
considers the delicate subject of his
love life. His story The Student is
subjected to a literary analysis, while
another contributor
interpretes
it
from
a biblical angle. The most comprehen¬
sive essay presented, viz. that of Prof.
Gleb
Struve, deals with
Čechov
s
re¬
lation to the author Grigorovic. Thus
the various authors do not start
from one common point of view,
there is no unity of theme or ap¬
proach. From this very feature the
volume derives its many-sided nature.
The originality of view and the fresh
way of approach as reflected in seve¬
ral of the essays presented here, com¬
bine to render this book one of the
most important publications of the
Čechov
centenary year.
