The original manuscript of Tsar Ivan IV's Reply
to the Czech brother
Jan Rokyta
was found in the
United States in private possession. This document
is of great importance to historians and theologians
as well, since it defines the Tsar's position in re¬
gard to religious questions and to religious dissen¬
ters in particular. That the Tsar himself had attri¬
buted great importance to this Reply can be seen
from the care with which it is structured. The
language also is colorful, forceful and precise.
Literary qualities cannot be denied to this work,
and a triple edition was thought necessary. The
Reply is therefore published in facsimile, in trans¬
literated form and in English translation. Thus the
Reply of Ivan IV has been made available to
scholars of many fields.
The text indicates the existance of a document
written by
Rokyta
to which the Reply has been
made. After some searching it was found in the
Czech National Museum, as well as the first trans¬
lation of the Tsar's Reply. Both are written in
Polish. Both are also published in this book in
facsimile, transliteration and translation. For all
texts this is their first publication.
In the transliterated text no changes in syntax or
morphology have been made, and to facilitate the
reading punctuation marks accepted in the modern
use have been introduced. Footnotes show different
readings in extant later copies. A philological de¬
scription of the manuscript is given in the Intro¬
duction.
With the addition of Tsar Ivan IV's Reply to
Rokyta
to his works it becomes very clear that the
Tsar was not only an excellent writer but that in
producing his works he had a well thought out
system. He does never repeat himself. His epistles,
to which the Reply also belongs, are a series of
works or articles in which Ivan IV states his views
on various political matters or questions that are
related to his politics. That he knew to give each
of his works, articles or epistles, whatever they
may be called, its own style, its own language and
mode testifies of his ability to manipulate literary
devices and to give a literary form to his political
ideas.
