The symbolist movement in Russian
literature
led to a vigorous renaissance
of poetry during the last decade of the
nineteenth century and the first decade
of the twentieth, and its adherents elabor¬
ated a comprehensive philosophy around
the symbolist theory of art. The poetry of
such figures as Bryusov,
Baľmont, Ivanov,
Bely
and
Blok
often reflected this philoso¬
phy very closely, and cannot be properly
understood in isolation from it.
Mr West analyses a broad selection of
the theoretical writings of the symbolists,
their predecessors and their contem¬
porary opponents. His study is centred
on the critical and philosophical essays
of Vyacheslav
Ivanov,
the most consistent
and intellectually impressive of the move¬
ment s theorists. He places the ideas of
the Russian symbolists in their context,
describing their essential characteristics
by reference to cognate theories of art
that may be more familiar to the Western
reader.
