In this book the composition of eight
of Gogol s short stories is analysed.
This work succeeds more than any
other in eludicating the finer points of
Gogol s technique: the division into
chapters, their effective opening and
closing motifs, the surprise transitions,
the contrasts and parallels, the leit¬
motifs; the use of symbols, the
rôle
of
the narrator, etc. In handling these
questions, the author frequently arrives
at new interpretations, which he con¬
trasts with existing views. For instance,
after making a penetrating analysis of
the double-narrative style in The
Two Ivans with its different forms of
irony and the apparently indiscrimi¬
nate use of past and present tenses, he
throws new light on the function and
significance of the end of this story.
}
Inthe same way, by unravelling the
^structure of The Overcoat , he brings
us nearer to the solution of a contro¬
versial problem: the disputed function
of the fantastic* ending of this story.
At th^same time,; his investigation of
:
this point leads him to make
:
a fresh
asśesśtnent
of
thé genre
of this
;

story* an assessment which runs counter
;
to characterisations pi The Overcoat
aş
á
grotesque or
realistic-cum-trägic
tale ¡with
än
underlying humane sig¬
nificance,
;
-No less important is
Driessen ş
pen¬
etrating insight into the actual extent
of Gogol s borrowing from other liter¬
ary works and folk-tales. He shows
how slight these influences often are
or how individual their treatment is
in the light of the completely different
structure and thematic development
vof Gogol s product, as is seen in A
Terrible Revenge , which is alleged to
have been influenced by Tieck and
tìtoff
mann,
or in The Two Ivans ,
which
iś
supposed to show the in-
;
jluence of Narezhny s work, although
the latter differs from that of Gogol
in terms of composition and scope.
:
Driessen, equally, rates correctly
the degree of importance to be at¬
tached to the use in ^Viy of motifs
and plots imported from folk-tales by
contrasting the structurally Completely
different art form of the literary short
story with the simple form of the
folk-tale. At the same time, he sheds
some penetrating light on the origin
and function of the Viy V a figure
which does not occur in the folk-tales.
The obscure origin of this figure,
particularly the fact that its occur¬
rence causes an abrupt break in the
composition of the story and cannot
be justified on the grounds of any
intrinsic aesthetic necessity, obliges
Driessen at this point (as
ät
compara¬
ble points in other stories)
tö
have
recourse to a non-aesthetic expla¬
nation. V
He invokes the aid of depth psy¬
chology to elucidate those passages in
Gogol s work which seem out of
place and whose occurrence must be
attributed to subconscious forces. The
subconscious force governing Gogol s
personal life is fear, as the writer con¬
cludes in an introductory psycho-ana¬
lytical commentary on important facts
from Gogol s life.
Driessen ş
very
cogently postulated viewpoint is that
this fear leads in several stories to the
introduction of passages which cannot
be explained in the light of the logical
development of the plot.
One of the most enthralling and,
original features of
Driessen ş
study is
that, when his own compositional
method can no longer provide him
with a solution, he turns to psycho¬
analysis for a possible explanation,
aware, all the while, that, in so doing,
he is resorting to an extra-literary
device.
