Zusammenfassung: | Among nineteenth-century Americans, few commanded the reverence and respect accorded to Henry Clay of Kentucky. As orator and as Speaker of the House for longer than any man in the century, he wielded great power, a compelling presence in Congress who helped preserve the Union in the antebellum period. Remini portrays both the statesman and the private man, a man whose family life was painfully torn and who burned with ambition for the office he could not reach, the presidency.--From publisher description. |

Among nineteenth-century Americans, few com¬
manded the reverence and respect accorded to
Henry Clay of Kentucky. One of the greatest
orators of the century, he equaled or surpassed
his contemporaries Daniel Webster and John C.
Calhoun. In this major new biography, Robert
Remini
shows Clay, the Speaker of the House for
longer than any man in the century, as a major
character in the drama of the new nation. Clay
wielded almost unimaginable power through his
wit, biting satire, and golden voice. He was a
beloved figure whose compelling presence in
Congress, more than any other, helped preserve
the Union in the antebellum period. Indeed, it
was his magnificent proposal to avert division
that resulted in the famous compromise of
1850.
As Speaker of the House, Clay championed a
vision of a prosperous United States whose peo¬
ple were rally represented in governmental deci¬
sions. But he suffered enormously their repeated
rejections of his bid for the presidency. If he foiled
in any area, it was not his purported womanizing
or drinking but his towering ambition for what
he perceived to be his destiny.
Remini also
reveals the human side of an ex¬
traordinary man whose great sense of duty and
humor helped him overcome the many painful
aspects of his personal life. Of his children, he lost
all six of his daughters. He had to commit one son
to a lunatic asylum and suffered another who was
a severe alcoholic. His wife would neither accom¬
pany him to Washington nor write letters. His
lonely expressions of grief are seen here in marked
contrast to the wit and charm that characterized
the words he uttered in public that won the hearts
of so many of his countrymen.
