1 Disjecta membra poette 3
Widespread claims that Balzac's La Comedie humaine is fragmented
should be considered in the light of the novelist's conventions. For
him, a fragment was an indication of a whole, requiring inter-
pretation; on both small and large scales, he depended on readers
to grasp the sense of these parts and to tie them together with
others. Precise principles guided the novelist's claim that his work
was unified. Readers who sense these guidelines will perceive
Balzac's perhaps flawed and certainly incomplete cycle as a unit of
exceptional rigor and consistency.
2 Image Structure 122
The continuing controversy around Le Pere Goriot, where estab-
lished critics disagree on whether Goriot or Rastignac resides at
the center of the novel, provides an incentive to consider the de-
gree of Balzac's commitment to plot as an organizing device. In
fact, a study of his theoretical writings and, more important, such
viii Contents
creations as the already mentioned Le Pere Goriot and Les Secrets
de la princesse de Cadignan indicate that Balzac's narration is sub-
ordinated to description, though description is usually illustrated
by one or more narrations. Description, moreover, is keyed by
central images which are subordinate to what Balzac called 'the
generative idea [I'idee mere].'
3 Unifying Units 46
Balzac's images are linked to each other and to the whole by repe-
tition, which is played out through parallels, opposition, devel-
opment, and systematic variation. This principle can be seen at
work in the creations studied in the preceding chapter but
perhaps more easily by observing the way Balzac brought together
fragments of his previous publications to create the units titled
Splendeurs et miseres des courtisanes, La Femme de trente arts, and 'La
Fille aux yeux d'or.' The novelist deploys details, characters, mo-
tifs, images, symbols, and repeated plots in ways that weave these
writings into a tapestry of incredible density and strength.
4 Conjoining the Disjoined 74
Balzac's weak commitment to plot grew more obvious in the
1840s, as his ideas about his magnum opus clarified in his own
mind, but the orientation can be seen very early in his career.
Collections like Autre etude de femme, Jesus-Christ en Flandre, and
Histoire des Treize show him successfully putting together works
which earlier seemed marginally related, at best, but which gain
considerable luster in their new arrangements. His skill in
repeating elements continues in evidence, though it is perhaps
more interesting to realize that his limited use of chronology and
his important use of arrangement point to significant devices
responsible for bringing the entire Comedie humaine into a
coherent pattern.
5 Unframing Frames gg
Balzac's narrative frames are particularly skillful. In Sarrasine, La
Contents ix
Maison Nucingen, 'Facino Cane,' 'Z. Marcas,' 'Un Prince de la
Boheme,' and 'Le Chef-d'uvre inconnu' his frames serve not only
to highlight through parallels, but also to emphasize oppositions
and to cast light outward both onto the incorporating Comedie
humaine and onto reality itself. Balzac was acutely aware of
context, which he used to frame and, also, to suggest that other
visions could be conceived (if not perceived) in the interstices of
his works.
6 Configuring the Whole 125
La Comedie humaine reveals Balzac's intuition of a non-Aristotelian
world, where causal and chronological sequences are subordinated
to the entire configuration or image. As the novelist said re-
peatedly, he relied primarily upon 'idea' and 'image' to unify his
individual and corporate works. While readers are generally
agreed about the consistent philosophy undergirding the cycle, it
is perhaps now possible to see how the philosophical position is
reflected in the techniques bringing the carefully arranged,
constituent units of the Comedie into a whole. Balzac was the
master, not of collage — the construction of a whole from isolated
pieces — but of montage. he regularly constructed wholes from
other wholes, which he then cast into the magnificent vision of La
Comedie humaine.
