Zusammenfassung:This internationally significant book analyses the elements of architecture, drawing general principles from the current pluralism of style and approach, made possible by advances in design and construction. Written in two parts, the first a study of the 'grammar' of architectural form, the second a discussion of the relationship between form and place, the text provides a methodical reference to the constants in architecture, and their place in contemporary culture. Thoroughly illustrated and attractively presented, this book fills a gap that has been evident in the literature for some time. Pierre von Meiss studied architecture at the Ecole Polytechnique de l'Universitaire de Lausanne and subsequently practised his profession in Europe and the USA, before being appointed Assistant Professor at Cornell University in 1968. Since then, he has devoted his time to teaching and research, returning to Lausanne in 1970 and founding the Architectural Design Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL).
