NICHOLAS RESCHER
Philosophical anthropology is the philo¬
sophical study of the conditions of human
existence and the issues that confront peo¬
ple in the conduct of their everyday lives.
This book surveys, from a contemplative,
philosophical point of view, a wide variety
of human-interest issues, including hap¬
piness, luck, aging, the meaning of life,
optimism and pessimism, morality, and
faith and belief. The author s deliberations
blend historical, theoretical, and personal
perspectives into philosophical apprecia¬
tion of the human condition.
The philosophers of Greek antiquity
took philosophy to center around just this
issue of intelligent living
—
of determining
the nature of life under the guidance of rea¬
son. Such a perspective puts philosophical
anthropology at the top of the philosophi¬
cal agenda
—
a position it contested with
the philosophy of nature throughout clas¬
sical antiquity. In more recent times, how¬
ever, its prominence has declined
—
no
doubt, the author suggests, because mod¬
ern man s achievements have been more
notable in the natural than in the human
sciences.
When Oliver Cromwell said that what
matters for people is not what they want,
but what s good for them, he spoke like
a philosophical anthropologist. The prime
aim of the subject is to identify and clarify
the things that people should give atten¬
tion to because to neglect them impover¬
ishes their lives. Its concern is with the
matters that people should
—
and if sensi¬
ble, would—seek to employ as governing
principles of their lives. Accordingly, phil¬
osophical anthropology treats primarily
the value aspect of human existence, inquir¬
ing into what is of particular interest to us
and what is of particular importance for us.
The essays collected in this book do not
constitute a comprehensive system of
philosophical anthropology. Rather, they
represent a series of explorations and for¬
ays into various important sectors of the
subject that are closely connected with
other philosophical issues
—
particularly
in the areas of epistemology and ethics. In
general, they represent either mandatory
topics that must be treated in this field or
neglected topics that have not been given
just due.
The author s method is largely analytical
—
concerned to probe into the details of
issues, not to provide a large systemiza-
tion. But in helping to clarify the issues, it
puts into sharper focus the choices that con¬
front us in the management of life s affairs.
This is the sixth volume in the Stanford
Ѕеиеѕ
in Philosophy.
Nicholas Rescher is University Professor of
Philosoph}/
at the University of Pittsburgh,
and the author of several books, most recently
Rationality.
