A lucid, jargon-free analysis of the role of the
reader in re-creating and interpreting a
literary work of art. The Reader, the Text,
the Poem provides fresh answers to currently
controversial questions in literary theory for
anyone concerned with experiencing, inter¬
preting, or
teaching.
Recent discussions of literary theory have
tended to swing from neglect of the reader in
excessive preoccupation with the text to exal¬
tation of the reader as all-important. Here,
drawing on a lifetime of reading and experi¬
ence, Louise Rosenblatt avoids both extremes.
Without ignoring the essentiality of the text,
she restores the reader to a central role and
vividly demonstrates his crucial role in any
í
valid conception of the literary experience or
the critical enterprise.
І
Tb
do so, she, first, draws on the roots of the
transactional point of view in the works of
Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, and
John
Dewey,
reinforcing her discussions with
her own long experience and interdisciplinary
background in philosophy, anthropology, psy¬
chology, and linguistics. Second, she moves
from there to introduce and explain her con¬
cepts: the difference between the text and the
poem, transactional reading, and the concepts
of efferent and aesthetic reading, and draws
the reader into the subject, persuading him
gradually to a new, important point of view.
The concept expounded by Rosenblatt, with
great ease and skill, is that of the two-way
process involved in the transaction between
reader and text. She illuminates the crucial
and creative role of the reader—without, how¬
ever, incurring the fallacyofsubjestivism. Her
radical but sensible contrast between the
reader s activities in aesthetic reading and
other kinds of reading points up the inadequacy
of the usual definitions based solely on the
characteristics of the text which, she points
out, constitutes a blueprint for constructing a
new experience—the literary work of art or
poem. However, she emphasizes, the multi¬
dimensional process of eliciting a literary work
of art from a text derives in good part from the
hitherto neglected past experience of the reader.
Furthermore, Rosenblatt s analysis of the
multidimensional process gives new meaning
to terms such as evocation, interpretation,
and response. The transactional approach,
she shows, has far-reaching implications for
both the general reader and the professional
critic. The transactional theory leads to a clari¬
fication of the relationship between literary
criticism and other approaches to the literary
work of art, such as stylistics, textual analysis,
literary history or biography, and intellectual
and social history. Amply illustrating her theo¬
retical points, she provides contrasting inter¬
pretations of a number of varied texts, makes
reference to recent philosophical developments,
and discusses other critical approaches, such
as structuralism.
Because of its brevity and nontechnical style,
this book, although essential reading for the
specialist, is
_well__şuiţed^jor_
undergraduate
courses in criticism, critical theory, and aes¬
thetics, and undoubtedly will also interest
general readers concerned with literature.
Louise M. Rosenblatt is well known for her
contributions to critical theory and the teach¬
ing of literature. She is Professor Emeritus of
English Education, New York University. She
earned her doctorate in Comparative Litera¬
ture from the
Sorbonne.
Among her recent
books is Literature as Exploration (third edition,
New York,
1976).
