This authoritative text of one of the classics of political thought is read by students all over the world. It was first published in 1960, and demonstrated that the version usually read was in no way a representation of that ‘text for posterity’ which Locke left behind for the purpose. In preparing this critical edition Mr Laslett had unique opportunities. Locke’s personal papers in the Bodleian Library were open to analysis for the purposes of political theory, and an entirely new source was discovered. This was Locke’s personal library, the study of which turned out to be crucial for Two Treatises of Government. The results presented here have already had a considerable effect on the understanding of Locke and on the study of political thinking. Locke’s book cannot now, for example, be regarded as a rationalization of the Revolution of 1688: it was a call for a revolution yet to come. The appearance of this edition marked the beginnings of exact scholarship in a study where it had too long been absent. For the second edition Mr Laslett has brought the Bibliography up to date, and revised the Introduction. Differences of opinion and interpretations suggested by reviewers and other writers have, wherever possible, been recorded. He has extended the scope of the Index and added to the Appendices.
