adam_text	monuments of Vilnius rank among the best in Northeastern Europe. From the third quarter of the 18th century to the mid- 19th century, i.e. in the transitional period from feudalism to early capitalism, Classicism made itself felt in Vilnius. Building materials and constructions were further improved. The size of brick diminished. During the 1760s and 1770s faęades were noted for plasticity much the same as in Baroque though contained separate classical features. Between the 1780s and the early 19th century the finest works of the Lithuanian Classicism were created in Vilnius. The faęades of the buildings designed by the architect L. Stuoka-Gucevičius were dominated by majestic Doric porticoes, their composition was modest. The structures of the later period (about the mid- 19th century) began to display the features of the Empire style. Dwelling- houses were planned asymmetrical, with courtyards, sym- metrical faęades, and regularly spaced windows adorned with pediments. The basement floor was rusticated. The faęades of palaces were orderly designed. After the establishment of the Department of Architecture at the University, Vilnius turned into the centre and school of Classical architecture in Lithuania. From the second half of the 19th century till the 1920s the architecture of Historism gained ground in Vilnius with speci- fic trends of imitative stylization (Neo-Classicism, Neo-Ba- roque, Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Gothic, Neo-Byzantine) and those of eclecticism. Reinforced concrete was used for the first time in 1913. Apartment houses were the most popular buildings at that time. Blocks of flats were centred round closed-in small courtyards. Streetward faęades served representational pur- poses and bore rich ornaments imitating one or other historical style. Faęades of public buildings were particularly lavishly decorated. At the same period (1900-1914) Modernism with certain features of rationalism, unique forms and plasticity came to the fore. Apartment houses erected in this style were mostly not large, original in design, with many bows and balconies, and were ornamented with floral and geometrical decor. The period of modernistic architecture in Vilnius lasted from 1925 to 1940. Buildings of that time were noted for cont- rasts of rectangular and cylindrical volumes, tracery and plain plates as well as for new finishing materials (sandstone, granite, ceramic, tiles). Two periods may be distinguished in contemporary Vilnius architecture: the reconstructive period (before 1955) and the industrial period (after 1955). The first period was marked by the prevalence of the retrospective method, an uncritical, formal attitude towards the historical heritage, and wasteful expenditure. In the second period prefabricated reinforced concrete units got combined with bricks, ceramic slabs, metal- lic and glass structural elements. Large-scale construction of typical precast concrete blocks of flats was gaining momen- tum. When constructing new buildings in the historic quarters of the Old Town, efforts have been made to happily combine old and new objects into a harmonious whole, to soundly appreciate a particular historical background by endowing it with modern architectural features. Organic mergence of buildings with their surroundings, rhythmical originality of exterior elements, a functional well-appointedness of the design, moderate employment of national colouring in interior decoration, a sober evaluation of progressive traditions of local masters and creative experience of architecture in the fraternal Soviet republics and in socialist countries — these are the main principles followed by Soviet Lithuanian archi- tects in their efforts to further develop the rich architectural heritage of Vilnius.
