This is a completely different book from the original Or«/ Tradition (1961) and hence it is right that it should have a different title. It is also a very much better book than the original, though Rh it does not have the pioneering importance which made the originaí^L an academic best-seller. This new book does not bother, as the o!d one did, to arguee with now obscure historians about the validity of using oral evidence. It addresses itself directly and without apology to an account of the process bý which oral history is produced. In so doing it takes into account thç many developments of technique and interpretation which have developed, often in dialogue between Professor Vansina and his own pupils. It does not show an undue self-consciousness about such controversies nor does it make much if anything of recantation or repentance; nevertheless anyone familiar with the literature will find the book fascinating for the judgements made, often implicitly, on the state of the art and for the second thoughts, sometimes explicitly stated as such on Vansina s own part. The result is an enormously more subtle and convincing book than the original. It is important that it is being published in order to repłace the original which still obstinately retains its role as a handbook and guide. But it is important quite on its own. It shows a mastery of many disciplines and an independence of mind in regard to intellectual fashions which are wholly admirable. Its appeal should not be limited to historians of Africa nor indeed to historians as such since it has very interesting things
to say about the structuring of human memory and very effective criticisms to make of structuralism. In short it is a remarkable book.
