Selected Bibliography

A Documentary History of Russian Thought is the first
comprehensive and representative anthology of Russian social, political,
legal and historical thought from its formation in the eighteenth century to
the rise of Russian Marxism in the second half of the nineteenth century.
Designed primarily as a textbook for use in courses in Russian history
and intellectual thought, the editors have chosen their selections to explore
recurring, perennial themes, such as Russia and the West, reform or
revolution, the individual and society. However, the editors have also
included less well-known texts that deserve to be made accessible to the
English reader, because it is impossible to form a historical perspective of
the richness, diversity and complexity of Russian intellectual development
without taking them into account.
Over twenty thinkers, writers, social and political critics,
philosophers, historians and economists are represented. The major
figures of the period who played a unique historical role are all included:
Radishchev, Belinsky,
Herzen,
Chernyshevsky, Dostoevsky, Mikhailov-
sky, Bakunin, and Plekhanov. But this volume s unique strength, and a
special claim to the reader s attention, lies in the presentation of such less
well-known, but intellectually and historically important, figures as
Karamzin, Muravev,
Pestei,
Kireevsky, Aksakov, Granovsky, Botkin,
Lavrov and Tkachev.
The result is a collection that significantly modifies the conventional
view of Russian intellectual history, one that more accurately depicts the
surprising range of viewpoints from conservative and liberal, to
democratic and radical.
