1
The Sat Khande, started by Mohammed
Ali Shah
and never
finished. It stands by the Daulat Khana and, as the name implies,
was originally meant to be seven stories high.
2
The
Asari
Kothi in the Daulat Khana, the second palace complex,
first inhabited about
1789.
3
The
Gol
Kothi or Round House , near the Daulat Khana com¬
plex. Stylistically the house probably dates from the last twenty
years of the eighteenth century, but nothing is known of its his-
.
tory.
4
The lions of La Martiniere. Both a pun on Martin s home town of
Lyon in
France, and originally lantern holders. Red lights were
placed in the apertures in the lions manes, the light shown
through their open mouths.
5
The La Martiniere sphinx. From the fineness of the work it is
xii CONTENTS
probably
original,
i.e. not one of the figures replaced after the
earthquake of
1803
which destroyed many taller statues.
6
At the top of La
Martiniere.
7
The rear of the
Rumi
Dar waza
and part of the great courtyard of
the
Imambara,
the grandest religious complex in Lucknow.
Photograph about
1858.

London)
.
8
Inside one of the Qaisarbagh courtyards. The seemingly solid
facade of doors and windows was an illusion. In fact the facade
was part of an open corridor, as the shadows show.
9
The Well-House in the Husainabad quarter. European in concep¬
tion and in its statuary, the house to which it was attached was
demolished when the Husainabad
Imambara
was built.
10
The Golaganj
Imambara,
showing plaster work of the highest
quality.
11
A fine country house, now deserted, at Kakori, near Lucknow.
The ornamental pineapples on the parapet are made of green
glazed pottery.
12
The Banqueting Hall, Residency complex. A correct classical
building put up for the British Resident, probably by Saadat
Ali
Khan.
13
Barowen in
1977,
from the rear. The pavilion to the left contains
the spiral staircase to the sunken courtyard.
14
The Singharawali Kothi on the north bank of the Gomti. A
typical small country house , probably about
1840.
15
The Roshun-ud-daula Kothi in the Qaisarbagh. Topped by a
meaningless gold band it was the finest house in the complex,
and for that reason was annexed by Wajid
Ali Shah
on his com¬
pletion of the Qaisarbagh.
16
The British Residency during the siege of Lucknow.
17
John Wombwell s (the Residency Accountant s) bungalow,
overlooking the Gomti and tentatively identified on later maps as
Innes bungalow, though it may have been rebuilt. (Copyright
British Library, London).
18
One of the Qaisarbagh gateways, with gilt crowns , chattaries
and statues. (Copyright National Army Museum).
19
A part of La
Martiniere.
