Like his vision of Goethe, Mann too now seems a child of nature rather than of the
spirit, but Uboring eloquently to burn through nature into the transformation that
converts deathliness into a superb dialectical art.
—
HAROLD BLOOM
The novel with [Thomas Mann) has become its own critique
—
which is to say that
the novel in his hands becomes fully ironical.
. . .
Irony, for modern man since
Kierkegaard, has become the last valid attitude in the face of the absurd.
—EVA
SCHAPER
Mann has taken the artist to the other side of art; beyond the austere discipline or
the effort to achieve an ordering vision.
. . .
The artist as comic hero creates a world
where, himself his own creation, he lives out his inventions, always eluding
—
as
a masterful dancer seems to defy gravity
—
the tug toward a reality he need not
acknowledge. —MARTIN PRICE
Modern Critical Views is a gathering of a representative selection of the best contem¬
porary criticism of the poets, novelists, essayists, and playwrights of the Western world
who are most widely studied and read. This series of over
200
volumes contains essays
from every major school of criticism and extends from the ancients to modern and
contemporary authors.
Each volume in the series opens with an introductory critical essay by Harold Bloom
and an editor s note that comments on the individual analyses that follow. Also included
are a bibliography, notes on the contributors, and a chronology of the author s life. The
series arranges authors into these groups: the Ancient World; the Middle Ages and
Renaissance; the Enlightenment; British and American Romantics; the Victorians; the
American Renaissance; Modern American Novelists and Short Story Writers; Modern
American Poets and Dramatists; Canadian Writers; Modern British Authors; Contem¬
porary British Authors; Contemporary American Novelists and Short Story Writers; Con¬
temporary American Poets and Dramatists; German, Scandinavian, and Russian Writers;
and French, Italian, Spanish, and Latin American Writers.
This series is a critical portrait of the writers who, from ancient times to the present,
have shaped Western tradition. Modern Critical Views reflects both the evolution of
literary styles and ideas in Western culture and the present standing of authors in the
estimate of all of today s major critical schools.
