Introduction
It has now become something of a commonplace to justify any addition
to the almost overwhelming mass of critical and scholarly literature
on Wolfram
von Eschenbach.
A commentary, however, requires perhaps
less Justification, since the task of the commentator is to sift
through material, both primary and secondary, interpreting and con¬
solidating. The aim of the present Commentary is to provide detailed
information on an important and frequently discussed part of what many
hold to be the most significant work of medieval German literature.
Whereas modern scholars can admire the achievement of E. Martin
in producing a commentary not only on the whole of Parzival, but also
on Titurel, the need has been repeatedly expressed by medieval
Germaniste
for up-to-date, detailed commentaries on Wolfram s works.
We have to thank J. Heinzle for his concise and useful commentary on
Titurel and G.
Zimmermann
for her commentary on Book
VII
of Parzival.
A number of commentaries have been written on books of
Willehalm
(some of which were not published), most recently that of E.-J. Schmidt
on Book IX of that work.
A comparison between the commentariee of Heinzle and
Zimmermann
reveals a different hand at work and a somewhat different approach.
Similarly, a comparison between either of these and the present
Commentary reveals a number of differences. Such differences are in
part attributable to the different hand at work , in part, however,
to the differing demands of the text being commented upon.
The commentaries of Heinzle and
Zimmermann
are more concice than
the present work, principally because those portions of Wolfram s
works which they treat have received by no means the amount of scholarly
attention that has been devoted to Book III of Parzival, and in parti¬
cular to the
Soltane
episode. Secondly, a glance at the respective
bibliographies reveals a considerable difference in size. My aim has
been to investigate as much secondary literature of relevance on
Book III as possible. Whilst it would have been practically impossible
and altogether undesirable to include all the minor contributions to
Wolfram scholarship that have found little or no critical echo or
acclaim, it has nevertheless been my duty to return to the findings
of former generations of scholars that have unfortunately and often
unfairly been neglected of latter days, owing no doubt to the sheer
•Unübersehbarkeit
of the literature. One aim of the present Commentary,
then, is to (re-)direct attention to earlier as well as later work on
IX
any given point of interest.
It is hoped that all relevant literature has been covered,
except that which appeared shortly before May I98I, when the text
was completed.
The Commentary provides a line-by-line analysis of the text, in
which matters of linguistic, literary, and historical importance are
treated in detail. As Heinzle has already observed (p.
ix)
t it is
difficult to set up rules for what must be included in such a commen¬
tary and what may be omitted. This soon becomes as
:
t
were second nature
to the commentator, and it is to be hoped that the opinions of the
commentator and his readers do not vary too greatly in this respect.
Ky aim in vriting the Commentary has been always, with a potential
reader in mind, to provide as much relevant information as the reader
might reasonably find desirable. All points of grammatical, syntactic,
lexical, semantic, etymological, metrical, and stylistic interest,
importance, or difficulty are explained and commented upon in detail.
In the case of particularly difficult or obscure passages, a translation
is also provided.
The Commentary is based on the sixth edition of
Lachmann*
s
text,
this being the most widely used edition of Wolfram s Parzival today.
Divergences of any significance from the first edition (I833) are noted
in the Commentary, in particular a number of misprints and errors that
aroae after the first edition, which was the only one to be proof-read
by
Lachmann
himself. Divergences of importance or special interest
from the edition of A. Leitzmann are also noted, as are selected
divergences from other editions.
The annotated editions of
Bartsch
(second, revised edition) and
Bartsch,
revised Marti, as well as the commentary of Martin have been
constantly referred to, in order to shed light on the meaning of the
text. Lexical information has also been constantly sought in the
standard dictionaries (Bh Z, Lexer, DWB)
.
Of immense value have been
a number of computer-generated concordances, supplied by the Literary
and Linguistic Computing Centre, Cambridge.
Kost
valuable amongst
these has been a concordance to
Lachmann·
s
text of Parzival, produced
by Professor R.A. V/isbey. These concordances have greatly facilitated
the lexical work, owing to the accuracy and ease of reference they
rrovide (by listing each word in context), which has meant that
generally speaking it has been possible to provide full lists of referen¬
ces to a given point, unless specifically indicated to the contrary
(by the use of e.g., or, in the case of particularly numerous examples,
by the restriction of references to Book III)
.
Even where every effort
has been made to ensure a complete list, however, one cannot be
absolutely certain, in the case of a non-lemmatized, strictly alpha¬
betical concordance, of obtaining every single reference
-
especially
in the case of a text edited by Lachmann
-
on account of the frequent
multiplicity of graphic forms and the occurrence of words in
proclisis
before the headword being sought.
Linguistic parallels from other Middle High German works are
always included wherever these are able to shed light on the com¬
plexities of Wolfram s language and style. As Heinzle, citing
San-
Marte,
has noted (Heinzle, p.
χ),
there is little more tiresome,
when using a commentary, than having constantly tc look up references
in order to understand the commentator s argument. For this reason
significant quotations are given in full, a procedure which, while
swelling the bulk of the text, makes the Commentary (it is to be hoped)
the more valuable and easy to use.
Differences between Lachraann s text and the two principal
MSS
(D
and
G),
not always recorded in Lachmann s apparatus, and then not
always accurately recorded, have constantly been noted, except in the
case of insignificant (as opposed to significant) orthographic variants.
It has been possible to check text and apparatus against facsimiles of
the
MSS
(Kühnel, Abbildung -
it should, however, be noted that the
transcription of the
MSS
in this work contains a number of inaccuracies).
Other more significant variants of textual critical or interpretative
importance from the wider MS tradition are recorded and evaluated
as they occur in the text.
In addition to the linguistic commentary, all matters of a literary
nature that can feasibly be treated within the scope of a line-by-line
commentary are discussed in detail, and scholarly opinions are evaluated.
In a number of cases slightly longer excursuses1 are interpolated into
the text; these deal with problems that it seemed important and desirable
to treat, but which did not lend themselves to the briefer line-by-line
treatment. Originally intended as such is my essay Herzeloyde: Prob¬
lems of Characterization in Book III of Wolfram s Parzival (Euph.
75, 1981,
pp.
1-28),
which it later seemed more desirable to publish
separately, and to which reference is made in the Commentary.
Also treated in detail are all aspects of medieval life, civiliza¬
tion, and culture in their bearing on the text. These are explained
and set in their wider context.
In every case extensive bibliographical references are given,
both by way of acknowledgment, and also to enable the user to gain
easy access to relevant secondary literature. In addition to the
bibliographical references that relate directly to the text of the
XI
Commentary
,
I
bave
included a number of further references, where
appropriate, after a given piece of commentary, entitled Further lit.
Such references are to works either which treat a different aspect from
the one commented on, or which relate to matters of secondary or marginal
importance, which nevertheless might be of interest to some users.
The index at the end of the work aims also to be comprehensive
and should enable readers to gain speedy access to points of interest,
including such matters as are not restricted in scope to Book III
of Parzival.
It is my hope that the Commentary will be a useful working tool
for scholars in the field: its aim is not only to clarify and try
to solve existing problems posed by the portion of the text treated,
but also to suggest new avenues of enquiry and areas where work still
remains to be done.
