Women, State, and Party in Eastern Europe
provides a comprehensive look at the sta¬
tus of women in Eastern Europe with a
particular emphasis on the socialist period.
Topics addressed include the relationship
of Marxism to feminism, as well as the
factors that have conditioned efforts by the
governing elite to change the status of
women since the institution of commu¬
nist systems. Also examined are the sta¬
tus of women and women s movements in
several East European countries before
World War if, the political role of women,
women and work, and women in the
family. A concluding section of this work
examines the reflection of women in liter¬
ature, folklore, and research.
The contributors include American.
Canadian, and East European scholars and
are drawn from a number of academic
disciplines; yet a number of common
themes unite this work. First, there has
been an uneven pattern of change in the
role of women and a persistence of cer¬
tain traditional roles, and second, there
emerges a remarkable similarity in many
aspects of the lives of women in the coun¬
tries of Eastern Europe and in other areas
of the world as well.
