His name is synonymous with high style. His story is told
brilliantly by Valentine Lawford, his close friend for more
than three decades and himself a member of the great world
this book chronicles.
Horst's is the story of a restless youth, bursting out of his
straitlaced middle-class German family to study art in Ham¬
burg; becoming apprenticed to the architect
Le Corbusier;
meeting the wildly gifted and eccentric French Vogue photog¬
rapher Baron George Hoyningen-Huene (whose father was
chief equerry to the tsar); gaining entrance into the Paris beau
monde:
painters, writers, musicians, choreographers, decora¬
tors, dressmakers, counts and countesses, princes, poets
—
all connected, living by their own unconventional rules and
sexual mores, raging against one another, supporting one
another
—
and influencing one another's art (Chanel making
costumes designed by
Dali
for a Massine ballet; Dufy,
Bérard,
and Tchelitchew creating stage sets for
Giraudoux;
Giacometti and Matisse designing lamps and rugs for the
brilliant decorator Jean-Michel Frank; etc.).
Following Horst's progress, we are brought into the cen¬
ters of artistic and social energy
—
the Paris of the thirties,
the New York of the forties to which Europe escaped and
contributed, and everywhere (via jet) from the fifties on.
Here too is Horst's own testimony about his photography,
his subjects, his techniques, his innovations, improvisa¬
tions, the changing fashions

and our changing perception
of fashion
—
as well as the changing of the guard through
fifty years of British, French, and American Vogue.

In his magnificent photographs we see the central figures
of Horst's world, from Janet Flanner and
Noël
Coward to

Eleonora

Jean Cocteau.

NoaiUes, who is linked
to the world of Proust (her grandmother is said to have been
the model for the
Duchesse de Guermantes),
and who was
herself the patroness of
Cocteau, Dali,

Buñuel.

Dietrich (snapped at a lunch party), ostensibly pow¬
dering her nose, but caught studying in her mirror the face of
a fellow guest, Jean
Gabin,
as he lights another woman's
cigarette.

mansions and palaces whose extravagant life had been a secret
to the world outside until they were opened up to
