This collections of essays encompasses a
broad spectrum of European and Amer¬
ican (mostly immigration) history
—
with
particular emphasis on the military,
social, cultural and inter-nationality
relations of the peoples of East Central
Europe and their immigration to and
fortunes in the United States.
Chronologically the spread is equally
wide, stretching over a whole millennium
of history. Yet, these essays may also be
viewed as constituting an organic whole.
They are bound together by the personal¬
ity of General
Béla
К.
Király,
whose
scholarly interest as a historian has
ranged over much of the fields and topics
covered by the essays of his friends and
colleagues contained in this volume.
When originally conceived in the fall of
1981,
we were thinking only of a dozen or
so closely interrelated essays in military
history. Soon, however, we were forced to
conclude that
Béla
K. Király s
popularity
made our goal unrealistic. So many of his
friends volunteered to contribute to this
volume that we were compelled to
broaden its scope considerably. In ad¬
dition to seven essays in military history,
we have added contributions in five other
categories. These include six essays on
ethnicity, immigration and domestic
American politics, six essays on Central
and Southeast European social and poli¬
tical developments, eight essays on the
cultural development of the same region,
and four essays each on the inter-nation¬
ality and inter-state relationships in
Central and Eastern Europe. The thirty-
six contributors represent four distinct
disciplines and about half a dozen
countries on three continents.
We have also compiled a list of General
Király s
publications and prepared an as¬
sessment of his achievements as a his¬
torian.
