Zusammenfassung: | Focusing on midcentury Milwaukee, Eric Fure-Slocum charts the remaking of political culture in the industrial city. Professor Fure-Slocum shows how two contending visions of the 1940s city--working-class politics and growth politics--fit together uneasily and were transformed amid a series of social and policy clashes. Contests that pitted the principles of democratic access and distribution against efficiency and productivity included the hard-fought politics of housing and redevelopment, controversies over petty gambling, questions about the role of organized labor in urban life, and battles over municipal fiscal policy and autonomy. These episodes occurred during a time of rapid change in the city's working class, as African-American workers arrived to seek jobs, women temporarily advanced in workplaces, and labor unions grew. At the same time, businesses and property owners sought to reestablish legitimacy in the changing landscape. This study examines these local conflicts, showing how they forged the postwar city and laid a foundation for the neoliberal city.-- Focusing on mid-century Milwaukee, Eric Fure-Slocum charts the remaking of political culture in the industrial city of the 1940s. |

the remaking of political culture in the industrial city. This study examines these local conflicts, showing how they forged the postwar city and laid a foundation for the neoliberal city.--</subfield><subfield code="c">Provided by publisher.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Focusing on mid-century Milwaukee, Eric Fure-Slocum charts the remaking of political culture in the industrial city of the 1940s.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Working class</subfield><subfield code="x">Political activity</subfield><subfield code="z">Wisconsin</subfield><subfield code="z">Milwaukee.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Milwaukee (Wis.)</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic policy.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Milwaukee (Wis.)</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">20th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Travailleurs</subfield><subfield code="x">Activité politique</subfield><subfield code="z">Wisconsin</subfield><subfield code="z">Milwaukee.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Political Process</subfield><subfield code="x">Political Advocacy.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Economic policy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Working class</subfield><subfield code="x">Political activity</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Wisconsin</subfield><subfield code="z">Milwaukee</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJj8J7dbWccgBFPVchw3cP</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1900-1999</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Contesting the postwar city (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGCcFxRTP9gvxhV8MWjvh3</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Fure-Slocum, Eric Jon.</subfield><subfield code="t">Contesting the postwar city.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2013</subfield><subfield code="z">9781107036352</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2012049126</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)830202398</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBU</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBU</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=574858</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH26385956</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest Ebook Central</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL1357365</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10729880</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">574858</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest MyiLibrary Digital eBook Collection</subfield><subfield code="b">IDEB</subfield><subfield code="n">cis26006700</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">11087007</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBU</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |
