Zusammenfassung: | "Joy Williamson charts the evolution of Black consciousness on predominately white American campuses during the critical period between the mid-sixties and mid-seventies, with the Black student movement at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) serving as an illuminating microcosm of similar movements across the country." "As Williamson shows, increased university admission rates in the late 1960s did not lead to increased acceptance for Black students. In response to institutional apathy, or even hostility, Black students advocated Black unity, celebrated Black culture, and employed aggressive tactics to initiate a period of institutional reform during one of American higher education's most tempestuous eras. Williamson examines the creation of such groups as the Black Students Association at UIUC and looks at the effect the activities of such groups had on the wider student body, on academic administrators, and on university policies. Drawing on student publications of the late 1960s and early 1970s, as well as interviews with former administrators, faculty, and student activists, Williamson discusses the emergence of Black Power ideology, what constitutes "Blackness," and notions of self-advancement versus racial solidarity. Promoting an organic understanding of social protest and assessing the impact of Black student activism on an American campus, Black Power on Campus is an important contribution to the broader literature on African American liberation movements, the role of Black youth in protest movements, and the reform of American higher education."--Jacket |

Promoting an organic understanding of social protest and assessing the impact of Black student activism on an American campus, Black Power on Campus is an important contribution to the broader literature on African American liberation movements, the role of Black youth in protest movements, and the reform of American higher education."--Jacket</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">20th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Pax Romana, International Movement of Catholic Students</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/1086883225</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Champaign-Urbana (Ill.)</subfield><subfield code="x">University of Illinois.</subfield><subfield code="2">swd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">African American college students</subfield><subfield code="x">Political activity</subfield><subfield code="z">Illinois.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Discrimination in higher education</subfield><subfield code="z">Illinois.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">African Americans</subfield><subfield code="x">Civil rights.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85001935</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Discrimination dans l'enseignement supérieur</subfield><subfield code="z">Illinois.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Noirs américains</subfield><subfield code="x">Droits.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">EDUCATION</subfield><subfield code="x">Higher.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Ethnic Studies</subfield><subfield code="x">African American Studies.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">African American college students</subfield><subfield code="x">Political activity</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">African Americans</subfield><subfield code="x">Civil rights</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Discrimination in higher education</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Illinois</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJgt3k8FThFDJMfjp8rpfq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Studentenbewegung</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4058171-8</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Schwärze</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/1032831111</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1900-1999</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Black power on campus (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGpxtYT3DQ4VjJt3CGVFqP</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">Black power on campus</subfield><subfield code="z">0252028295</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2002015832</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=592687</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Black youth forcing change -- From Negro to Black : the Black Students Association -- The Special Educational Opportunities Program -- The launching of a movement -- "We hope for nothing, we demand everything" -- A lasting influence. Print version record. "Joy Williamson charts the evolution of Black consciousness on predominately white American campuses during the critical period between the mid-sixties and mid-seventies, with the Black student movement at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) serving as an illuminating microcosm of similar movements across the country." "As Williamson shows, increased university admission rates in the late 1960s did not lead to increased acceptance for Black students. Promoting an organic understanding of social protest and assessing the impact of Black student activism on an American campus, Black Power on Campus is an important contribution to the broader literature on African American liberation movements, the role of Black youth in protest movements, and the reform of American higher education."--Jacket University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign History 20th century.
